Metaphysical Musings

Who Are We? Or, What Are We?

Calvin: "This whole Santa Clause thing just doesn't make any sense. Why all the secrecy? Why all the mystery? If the guy exists, why doesn't he ever show himself and prove it? And if he doesn't exist, what's the meaning of all this?"

Hobbes: "I dunno... isn't this a religious holiday?"

Calvin: "Yeah, but actually, I've got the same questions about God."

From Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes collection, 'Yukon Ho!'

There is an intuitive feeling throughout most of mankind that we are more than our physical body. There is a Force evident in all our lives all of the time, that seems to conflict with common sense and self-image. How do we reconcile what we intuitively feel with what our senses tell us.

Sages throughout recorded time have attempted to answer the question. The myriad religious, philosophical, and psychological teachings that exist today exemplify this search—this spiritual journey.

A short extract from the Preface to Will Durant”s “The Reformation” Volume VI of his monumental tome “The Story of Civilization,” will suffice to echo my sentiments:

“Less than any other man have I excuse for prejudice, and I feel for all faiths the warm sympathy of one who has come to learn that even the trust in reason is a precarious faith, and that we are all fragments of darkness groping for the sun. I know no more about the ultimates than the simplest urchin in the streets.”

We call it metaphysics—“the study of the ultimate and fundamental reality.” www.willdurant.com/glossary.htm

One might say it is the attempt to describe the indescribable.

So with that said, I will be providing articles, statements, essays, references, sources or what-have-you that resonate with me. It will be my attempt to offer a glimpse into the unseeable, and perhaps provide a measure of understanding or comfort to other like-minded seekers.
